Kong: Skull Island

In 1973, a team of Monarch scientists, American soldiers and civilian specialists ventures into an uncharted island hidden in the South Pacific. Their seismic bombing campaign quickly provokes Kong, the enormous guardian of the island, turning an expedition of discovery into a desperate fight for survival. Colonel Preston Packard becomes determined to kill Kong in revenge for his fallen soldiers, while tracker James Conrad and photographer Mason Weaver gradually discover that the giant ape is not the island's true threat. Beneath Skull Island lurk the ravenous Skullcrawlers, predators responsible for destroying Kong's family. To survive, the expedition must understand that Kong is not merely a monster but the island's last great protector.

Kong: Skull Island is the second theatrical installment in Legendary Pictures' MonsterVerse, directed by Jordan Vogt-Roberts and released in 2017. Set in 1973, the story follows a Monarch-backed expedition into Skull Island, an isolated ecosystem concealed behind a perpetual storm system. The explorers encounter Kong, an enormous ape revered by the indigenous Iwi as the island's guardian rather than a destructive invader. Kong protects the ecosystem from the Skullcrawlers, subterranean predators responsible for killing his parents and nearly wiping out his species. The largest Skullcrawler becomes his principal opponent during the film's climax. Skull Island is portrayed as an extraordinary evolutionary refuge populated by creatures including Mother Longlegs, Sker Buffalo, Spore Mantis, Mire Squid and Leafwings, giving the MonsterVerse one of its first fully developed giant-creature ecosystems. Beyond reintroducing Kong for a new generation, the film plays a major role in transforming the continuity established by Godzilla (2014) into an interconnected cinematic universe. Monarch receives substantially more development, while the post-credits sequence explicitly connects Kong's story to Godzilla, Mothra, Rodan and King Ghidorah. These revelations establish the mythology that would lead into Godzilla: King of the Monsters and eventually the confrontation between Godzilla and Kong.
