According to paleontological research by Dr. Tadokoro in Godzilla Raids Again (1955), Anguirus is a surviving specimen of a fictional armored dinosaur genus called Angilosaurus (derived from Ankylosauridae), which roamed prehistoric Earth between 70 and 150 million years ago during the Jurassic and Cretaceous periods.

Much like Godzilla, Anguirus remained dormant in deep cryogenic hibernation beneath polar Arctic ice caps for millions of years until subterranean thermonuclear detonations following World War II irradiated and revived it. Possessing an instinctive predatory hatred towards any territorial rival, the beast locked onto the second-generation Godzilla, culminating in their cataclysmic clash on Iwato Island and across Osaka.

After the first specimen perished at Osaka Castle, a second generation of the species emerged in the late 1960s, residing peacefully on Monsterland alongside Godzilla, Rodan, and Gorosaurus.

Showa Anguirus features a heavily armored quadrupedal dinosaurian anatomy inspired by ankylosaurs and horned lizards:
