The origins of Gigan trace back to the distant reaches of the M Space Hunter Nebula. The native extraterrestrial civilization—an intelligent race of giant humanoid cockroaches—faced planetary extinction due to runaway pollution and environmental collapse on their home world, driving them to target Earth for imperial colonization.

To wage war against Earth's native defenders, the Nebula M invaders captured a vicious native alien reptilian predator and subjected it to grotesque, radical cybernetic augmentation:

• Brutal Surgical Synthesis: The beast's ribcage was hollowed out to mount an industrial motorized revolving circular saw; its natural forelimbs were amputated and replaced with heavy forged steel hammer-claws.
• Cybernetic Headgear & Ocular Visor: Its skull was retrofitted with a panoramic red infrared visor lens and neural command receiver antennas.
• The Godzilla Tower Command Relay: Establishing a headquarters disguised as the World Children's Land theme park inside a massive replica statue known as the "Godzilla Tower," the aliens broadcast sub-audible radio frequencies from magnetic audio tapes to steer Gigan and King Ghidorah in synchronized assault.
