Maguma (Showa)

Maguma’s origins trace back to an ancient polar ecosystem that flourished prior to the Quaternary glaciation:

• A member of a gigantic ancestral walrus lineage (Odobenidae), Maguma was entombed within subterranean ice caves beneath the Antarctic ice cap, entering a state of natural cryogenic dormancy.
• In the early 1980s (the futuristic setting of Gorath), astronomers detected a runaway rogue celestial body named Gorath, possessing 6,000 times the mass of Earth and hurtling toward an inevitable collision.
• The global community mobilized humanity’s greatest engineering effort: the South Pole Operation, constructing gargantuan atomic thruster engines across Antarctica to push Earth 400,000 kilometers out of its natural orbit.
• The immense thermal radiation generated by these thermonuclear thrusters melted deep permafrost layers, violently waking Maguma from his ancient slumber in a state of unbridled territorial fury.

Sculpted by master monster modeler Teizo Toshimitsu under Eiji Tsuburaya's supervision, Maguma represents Toho's sole mammalian kaiju outside of King Kong:

• Colossal Blubbery Frame: A massive 50-meter-long body encased in thick, heavily wrinkled, slate-gray and muddy brown hide, backed by dense layers of blubber engineered to insulate against sub-zero polar temperatures.
• Twin Curved Ivory Tusks: Maguma's defining predatory feature consists of two enormous, solid ivory tusks curving downward from the upper jaw, sharp enough to pierce reinforced industrial piping and shatter bedrock.
• Whiskered Snout & Deep-Set Eyes: A wide, blunt muzzle covered in heavy tactile whiskers and a pair of dark, small, primal eyes burning with raw territorial aggression.
• Paddle-Like Flippers: Broad, muscular front flippers equipped with stout claws for hauling its 25,000-ton mass across ice sheets, complemented by a flattened hind fluke for sub-glacial marine propulsion.

• Defensive Instinct: Maguma is not an extraterrestrial conqueror or radioactive abomination, but a displaced prehistoric wild beast defending its nesting grounds against foreign heat-emitting machinery.
• Single-Minded Aggression: Fixates entirely on the thermal emission towers and noise-generating vehicles of the UN base, relentlessly smashing any obstacle standing in its path.
• Agony and Collapse: When trapped beneath avalanche rubble and struck by high-energy beams, Maguma roars in desperate agony, fighting to break free until mortal wounds overcome its stamina.

• Thermal Laser Vulnerability: Lacking natural shielding against concentrated optical radiation, Maguma's organic hide is quickly vaporized when subjected to high-energy atomic laser strikes.
• Crushing Avalanche Burials: Its ponderous quadrupedal crawl leaves it vulnerable to falling ice shelves; tons of collapsing glacier rock easily pin its bulk to the ground.
• Sluggish Terrestrial Mobility: Incapable of high-speed overland chases, making it an easy target for airborne gunships.

Gorath (1962) is widely revered among classic sci-fi enthusiasts for its technical ambition, but Maguma's presence has a legendary behind-the-scenes narrative:

• Tomoyuki Tanaka's Monster Mandate: Screenwriter Takeshi Kimura wrote Gorath as a serious, realistic space-disaster drama with no monsters. Producer Tomoyuki Tanaka, however, insisted that every major Toho sci-fi release required a daikaiju to guarantee box office revenue among younger audiences, prompting the creation of Maguma.
• Katsumi Tezuka's Heavy Performance: Veteran actor Katsumi Tezuka spent hours crawling on his knees inside the walrus suit on a refrigerated soundstage covered in artificial snow made of gypsum and soap flakes.
• Excised from the American Cut: When distributor Brenco Pictures released the film in the United States, they felt the giant walrus undermined the film's tense sci-fi tone, completely removing all scenes of Maguma. In Japan, however, Maguma achieved enduring cult status, eventually earning a cameo on a monitor screen in Godzilla: Final Wars (2004).
