Varan represents an evolutionary anomaly dating back to the Triassic period over two hundred million years ago. A member of the amphibious ancestral genus Varanopode, the creature survived mass extinctions by adapting to the secluded ecosystem of Lake Iwadai, buried deep within the fog-shrouded Kitakami mountain range of northern Iwate Prefecture.

Isolated from modern human civilization, the inhabitants of an ancient secluded mountain village revered the monster as their ancestral deity, "Baradagi-sama" (婆羅陀巍山神), performing sacred ceremonies to appease the spirit and avert catastrophic seismic tremors.

In 1958, two entomologists investigating an endemic Siberian butterfly species perished under mysterious circumstances in the valley. A subsequent scientific expedition accompanied by the Japan Self-Defense Forces detonated depth charges in Lake Iwadai to unmask the threat. Awakened by the explosions, the enraged Varan surfaced, crushed the village, unfurled its gliding flaps, and charted a flight path toward Tokyo Bay, triggering a desperate military containment effort.

Decades later, in 1968's Destroy All Monsters, a preserved Varan specimen resided in harmony with Godzilla and the Earth titans within the protected reserve of Monsterland in the Ogasawara archipelago.

Varan's physical anatomy merges theropod, monitor lizard, and gliding mammal characteristics:

• Ivory-White Dorsal Spines: A striking row of sharp, calcified white dermal spikes extending from the crest of the skull down the entire length of the tail, acting as impenetrable defensive armor against rear assaults.
• Expandable Patagium Membranes: Foldable, leathery elastic skin flaps connecting the wrists to the ankles. When leaping from elevated terrain, Varan fully abducts its limbs, transforming its body into an aerodynamic flying-wing lifting body.
• Spiked Cranium & Crested Ears: A menacing reptilian skull adorned with jagged lateral cheek spikes, backward-pointing cranial horns, and glowing amber eyes evocative of ancient mythological dragons.
• Webbed Digitigrade Claws: Powerful quadrupedal legs tipped with clawed digits connected by interdigital webbing, allowing steady crawling, bipedal rearing, and swift underwater maneuvering.

• Defensive Territoriality: Varan is not inherently malicious; he acts as an aloof apex predator guarding his ancient valley against industrialized human intrusion.
• Unflinching Defiance: When bombarded by artillery, rockets, and depth charges, Varan presses forward with stubborn stoicism, smashing through coastal defensive emplacements without hesitation.
• Peaceful Sanctuary Life: Integrated into the Monsterland habitat, Varan demonstrates calm equilibrium, gliding gracefully through tropical thermal currents without hostility toward human observers.

Varan's downfall lies in his instinctive predatory attraction to bright, burning phosphorus illumination:

• At Haneda Airport, the JSDF exploited his habit of swallowing airborne flares by parachuting time-delayed explosive flare canisters into his path.
• Ingesting the burning flares, the delayed detonations ruptured Varan's internal tissues, inflicting severe internal trauma and forcing his retreat beneath the waves.

• Pioneering Gliding Marionette: Created through an ingenious combination of a rubber suit worn by Haruo Nakajima and Katsumi Tezuka for terrestrial scenes and an articulated miniature glider puppet for aerial flights, Varan remains one of Eiji Tsuburaya's most admired practical creations.
• Enduring Cult Status: Despite limited subsequent film appearances, Varan's unique aesthetic and atmospheric folklore roots make him a timeless favorite among vintage Kaiju connoisseurs.
